BRIER PTA BOARD MEETING MINUTES FROM THURSDAY

JANUARY 18th , 2007

*Meeting was called to order @ 6:03 pm

*All members were present except Cathy Fiorillo- excused

*Reviewed and approved by general consent the PTA minutes from 10-12-06.

PRESIDENTS REPORT:

*Mid year audit schedule for next week - tentatively 1-24-07.

*Copying and paper usage is still an issue.  Please keep track of logging what you are using.  Continue efforts to cut usage.  Be mindful.

*PTA & The law class:  Debbie and Sue attended.  Still need to share the information in a separate meeting.  A proposal was to meet at 5:30 prior to the March board meeting.  This will give Debbie and Sue time to provide everyone a copy of notes taken at the class in order to be respectful of everyone’s time.

*Debbie will be forwarding a request for a message from DSHS on foster care parents needed in the Lynnwood area.  This is not a PTA area and will be passed on to Cindy and possibly shared in a school bulletin.

PRINCIPALS REPORT:

*There is no information to date on snow make up days.  Be watching the bulletin for information .  It will be posted as soon as it becomes available.

*The state will be taking away teacher - no school days for next year.  These days currently happen under a waiver and are used for teacher professional development.  We are all working to keep kids in school.  Nick Brossoit is working with the school board to see how we can best accomplish both.

*Popcorn Fridays could soon be changing.  National food service audit states that any food sales on school grounds during lunch hour could be taking away from children eating a nutritional lunch.  No immediate change.

*Student Council is a great group.  Toy drive went great.  They are currently working on a coat drive, the district assigned food drive, and earth day.  Watch for up and coming spirit days and a suggestion box.

*Site Council is working on a parent volunteer point person to free up teachers.  This person would be more then a room parent.  They will help to organize field trips, phone calls, etc.

TREASURERS REPORT:

*Line item 17 & 18 became PTA funded events at no cost to participants.

*Line item 36 - used book sale-- removed, not happening this year.

*Line item 44 & 45 money was moved to cover these line items.

*Line item 118 money was granted over .

MEMBERSHIP REPORT:

*We are currently at 280 members with 100% teacher participation.  We are still working toward our goal of 300 members.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Programs:

*The website for ordering Bobcat clothing  is up and running.  We have received a check for $65.70 in profits thus far.

*Reflections:  Out of 20 participants that went to council, 1 student from Brier Elementary was selected to move on to the State level of competition.  Congratulations to Kali Miller

*Science fair discussion is tabled till next meeting for updates.

Fundraising:

*Verizon Wireless flyer was passed around for review as a potential fundraiser.  It was agreed to continue forward and participate in this fundraiser.

Social:

*"Family Swim" event sponsored by the PTA,  was a success.

*Movie night is moving forward, the date ahs been set for  February 9th.  Cathy will be meeting Karen Martin on 1-19-07.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:

Field Improvements Update:

*Phase 2 plans, exercise stations, are moving forward.  The committee has received the District approved company brochures.  The next step will include the student council putting together a survey for the students to pick what they are most interested in.

*On-Line Communication:  PLEASE promote.  The news Brier Bulletins are now available on-line.  Approximately 100 families are participating at this time.  Currently Lesa is scanning all attachments to get it to Julie for distribution with the Tuesday packets.  This is a short term solution.  The PTA is working creating a web-site with  PTA member, Bob Cuplin. The goal is to make sure whatever we do it has to be accessible, easy to use, and kept up-to-date.  It has to be as easy to use as our current events calendar.

NEW BUSINESS:

General Membership Budget Revision Proposal:

*A hand out was provided to review prior to  presenting at the PTA general membership meeting.

Due to the amount of "Carry-over" funds available in the current budget with the additional $3084 from net funds, the PTA compiled information gathered from teachers, staff, and the principal on where the funds could be best used.  A hand out was passed out for everyone's review. (see attached handout "Brier PTA Fund Allocation Proposal" dated  1-18-07).  The Proposal covered :  Increase teacher  allowances at grade band levels; Continue to update library collection; Improve opportunities for physical exercise; Increase "Arts Enhancement" programs.

"Brier Elementary Arts Festival":

*Planned for connecting with open house on May 15th.  There is a concern with parent volunteers.  The committee is meeting on 1-19-07.  This is event is being handed over to the school's Arts Committee, and will not be a PTA event.  We will be supporting in any way possible.  It is possible that the PTA could add a very low key event at the end of the year in place of the festival.  Maybe snow cones at the park.
